Wild West

To understand one feud in Notting Dale, they say, you have to understand ten feuds before it. The trail of violence that ended in the death of 21-year-old Billy Smith - shot in his back as he ran towards his aunt's house in Latimer Road on May 9, 1960 - bears this out.

Many of those interviewed by the police about Kelso Cochrane's murder a year before were also questioned about Billy Smith 's death, and the links between the cases are explored in Murder in Notting Hill.

Billy's unofficial stepfather, Bill Cousins (below), a true Dale character by all accounts, was among those swept up in the violence that night.
